The Ethereal Fashion of Stevie Nicks

It is indisputable that Stevie Nicks, known to some as the “White Witch'', is a (if not the) goddess of ‘70s rock n roll. With her haunting alto tone, stunning vibrato, and songwriting comparable to that of poetry, Nicks’ talent has had a bewitching effect on fans for almost half a century and has shown no signs of slowing anytime soon. While Nicks’ talent as a musician is what made her arguably one of the largest household names of the ‘70s and ‘80s, both with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist, the allure of Nicks herself is not just in connection with her music, but also her aura in its entirety.

If asked to summarize the style, as well as the overall essence of Nicks in 5 words or less, the most appropriate words would be: ethereal, witchy, bohemian, celestial, and timeless. With her long lace dresses, layered fabrics, crystal pendants, and platform boots, it is undeniable that Nicks’ appeal stretches far beyond the realm of her artistry and impeccable talent. Seen today within the popular indie style and “crystal girl” aesthetic, aspects of Nicks’ witchy persona has, and will continue to appear in trends for years to come.

Here is our list of what we think are the most defining features of Nicks’ iconic style.

Flowy Fabrics

The most defining feature of almost every outfit Nicks is her use of fabric. Known for layering various forms of lace, chiffon, and velvet, often with one of her signature shawls, Nicks almost appears to float across the stages she performs on, giving fans an angelic glimpse into the free spirit that she is well known to be. The use of these fabrics could also be interpreted as Nicks’ embodiment of some form of bird or flying creature, which is a motif seen in her album “Bella Donna,” and is most well known for its’ appearance in her smash hit “Edge of Seventeen.”

Statement Pendants & Crystal Jewelry

Before pendants and crystal jewelry were the rage of 2021 indie fashion, they were Stevie Nicks’ signature pieces. Within Nicks’ bohemian gypsy-witch glam, the jewelry often took the shape of stars or crescent moons, a style that has been seen in trends over recent years to create a moon child-esque appearance. This goes hand in hand with her fondness for crystal pendants.

Top Hats

Interestingly, another common trend amongst Nicks’ iconic looks is the inclusion of a black top hat. Channeling a kind of gothic-chic, the artist became known for wearing these hats — which were sometimes accentuated by dramatic feathers or floral details — while performing or at photoshoots. While Nicks’ reasoning for rocking top hats doesn’t appear to have well known meaning or symbolism behind it, the hats are still a fun and dark addition to her normal gypsy style.

Platform Boots

Lastly, none of Stevie’s outfits would be complete without a pair of classic platform boots. In true ‘70s fashion, Nicks incorporates the boots into a large majority of her looks, making her stage presence even more powerful and commanding than it already was. In slew of the returning  ‘70s trends, platform boots similar to the style worn by Nicks have reemerged in recent years, with consumers opting for the elevated style and exaggerated look of the shoes.

Now that you know what to wear, embrace your inner Stevie and rock some iconic ‘70s fashion!
