Fast is Out, Slow is In

Tennessee-based label byBrazier has made strides towards slow fashion. Owner and designer Charlie Brashier created the brand with sustainability in mind, producing unique pieces that use something old to bring something new to your closet. The brand provides quality, hand-printed pieces that highlight original design work.

Who is ByBrazier?

Born and raised in a small town in Tennessee, Charlie Brashier always longed for a creative outlet. After his senior year in high school, he found just that. Brashier joined the famous collective MSFTSrep, that is “Dedicated To Evolving The Consciousness Of Humanity Through Science And Art”. This gave him the opportunity to surround himself with like minded artists and find a passion for fashion. Given the chance to run the Tennessee Instagram page, the world of graphic design work and social media was opened. While the experience was a great jumping off point, Brashier wanted more, a desire to have something of his own led to other ventures.

Brashier found a passion for fashion design by non traditional means, first pursuing an education in architecture. When the pandemic hit, he realized it was time for something new, and byBrazier was born. The brand, Unfinished legacy was a huge inspiration in the beginning; it is a brand that expresses enormous amounts of creativity and care for the planet. The focus on sustainability was at the forefront during the developmental stages of his own label, as he wanted to create something that “went beyond fashion”, positively affecting the world around him in more ways than one. The brand’s mission statement reads: “We want to provide a more sustainable option to be fashionable by printing mainly on vintage and used clothing”, continued on their site, “byBrazier seeks to redefine the story of discarded clothing, giving every piece a chance to bring value once again”. While the brand is still growing, Charlie expressed that the “work” isn’t work at all because it has given him the creative freedom he has always wanted. He still works a job to be able to maintain his current momentum, working for the brand full-time being his long term goal. His advice to anyone pursuing a passion project is the same words he received in the very beginning from his friend Marc Perales, “You have to do what you have to do, to do what you want to do”, in other words don’t be discouraged by working jobs that aren’t your passion, it's just one of many steps that will get you where you want to be.

The one-man studio has, impressively, been able to manage recent traffic with a little extra help from friends and family (when needed). The first project launched, The  Logo tee, has developed into several new pieces that all bring something exciting to the site. All items are hand printed in house including tee shirts, sweatpants, and even tote bags! All works feature original designs and are printed on vintage or used pieces. Clothes are hand picked and carefully crafted, providing undeniable quality combined with reasonable price points. The name is a play on the fact that everything is done completely by him. It’s by…Brazier. The spelling of the name is an attempt to make it easier for others to pronounce (brae-sher), plus it looked pretty cool on a T-shirt.

The I Hate Matty Healy Tee

Charlie explained that throughout the entire creative process he has tried to focus on the things that bring him joy, it just so happens that people love the designs – and we definitely do! The I Hate Matty Healy Tee was the first piece of the byBrazier line inspired by The 1975. Brashier has always enjoyed their music, and in the wake of their newest album and tour, he found inspiration in the band’s promotional materials. He expressed, “I could just see the potential”. Drawing inspiration from album shoots, he created several designs. The shirt was a play on an ironic, inside joke for the band's fan base. This was the start of byBrazier’s momentum; it was a passion project that turned into so much more. The I Hate Matt Healy Tee went viral on TikTok, with many fans opting to wear it to The 1975’s most recent At Their Very Best tour. Lead vocalist, Matty Healy, even got a kick out of the shirt when Charlie was able to gift him one during their Atlanta show.

What to Look Out For

Sustainably Depressed Kids is a recent line that launched through the site. The message behind it being “not all sustainable things are positive”, bringing attention to the things we hold onto that aren’t necessarily good for us. Mental health awareness is something really important to Brashier and he made a point to express that through his design work for the line. The Thrifted 988 Sweatshirt boldly depicts the national suicide hotline, placing emphasis on important matters while utilizing wearable pieces.

ByBrazier has now released a continuation of The 1975-inspired line including the I Love Adam, I Love George, and I Love Ross tees. The tees have a modern black font and the musician’s faces featuring original design work. He also has the Modernity Has Failed Us tee and hoodie that give minimal alternatives to popular merch options. In addition to these, he has also designed an I Love Harry tee for any Harry Styles fans looking for ways to bring their favorite artists into their wardrobe.

The brand byBrazier has put a new spin on slow fashion, giving the industry a fresh and exciting direction. Efforts to care for our planet and create a label that brings something new to the table do not go unnoticed. In the future, Charlie will continue to pursue the things that he is passionate about, and we are excited to see what he accomplishes.
