Don't Sweat it

While spin classes have been around for a few decades, they recently have gained much popularity. The concept of group workout classes started in the ‘90s with the rise of the step movement. From water aerobics to yoga classes, group exercise began surfacing. There are many different ways to get exercise: Pilates, CrossFit, gym memberships, going on walks, and much more. So what is all this hype on cycling about?

Cycling is a low-impact exercise that is as challenging as it is exhilarating. Kensley Miller loves her job as a cycling instructor at Piranha Fitness Studio in University Square and has worked there since last November. She says, “I find cycling classes more enjoyable than normal workouts because of the environment of the room. It’s pitch black, the music is loud, and we use overhead colored light to set the tone for the song. Everything about it makes it feel more fun and distracting than any other workout!” Not only is this exercise enjoyable, but it is also much easier on the joints than running. You are less likely to suffer from injuries and cycling increases the strength and function of your muscles, allowing you to stay fit and active. This is a full-body workout targeting the core, upper body, glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and lower legs. Kensley says, “It’s also very inclusive because you can change the intensity of your workout by changing the resistance and making it more attainable or more difficult depending on skill level.” Classes are all designed differently and each one is up to you to decide how hard you want to push yourself, but it will always be a great full-body workout, as all of your muscles are engaged.

Attending cycling classes isn’t only good for your body, but for your mental health as well. Cycling signals an adrenaline rush and endorphin release with the perfect combination of fun music and an enthusiastic instructor; proven to lower stress levels. Spin classes are also fun to partake in because of the group environment. There is a mentality of “we’re all in this together” which pushes individuals to work hard as a team. Research shows that group exercise not only lowers stress, but improves emotional well-being by increasing social connectedness and mutual support. While most exercises help with stress management, cycling is a very effective way to both improve fitness and reduce stress. Kensley says, “Cycling is the ultimate ‘put me in a good mood’ solution.” If you need an adrenaline boost, attending a spin class is the way to go.

The only downside is the pricing of spin can be expensive. Many local places like The Cycle Station and Orange Theory offer great classes from experienced coaches. If you are on the fence about starting a membership, the Cycle Station offers your first class free to try and see if cycling is a good fit for you. Another important part of spin is to find an instructor who you connect with. We recommend trying a class with Kensley at Piranha and experiencing exactly why she loves cycling so much!
